| | | Xi An, ChinaThe city from which China was unified by the first Qin Emperor. It lies at the start of the chinese end of the Silk Road, and is historically so open to foreigners that there is an ancient mosque still in existance in a 'muslim quarter.' It was also where Xuan Zang (Tripitaka) left from to journey to India for the sutras of the Greater Vehicle in the 'Monkey' Stories. I wish I'd known that when I was there!
Xi'An means western peace, but in the days of the Qin unification of China, it was called Chang'an (eternal peace) because of the shaan'xi provinces wide arable plateau surrounded on all sides with defensible mountains. |

| | | Hong KongWhat's there to say about Hong Kong?
Only that, although I expected the weather, the culture, the technology and the fascinating history, I was completely unprepared for how utterly beautiful this city is. Very few of the photos do it justice, alas. |
